IS YOUR SAFETY EQUIPMENT FIT FOR PURPOSE?
CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE LOGIC OR SCIENCE SUPPORTING THIS PRACTICE?
€10,000 IF YOU CAN.
IS YOUR SAFETY EQUIPMENT FIT FOR PURPOSE?
WILL IT PROTECT YOU? WILL IT TRIP THE BREAKER?
The following table gives the actual worker protection provided by 25sq.mm. conductor for the popular transformers used in Ireland to-day.
Formula: Current density I²t/A² [(A/mm²) ².s]
CAPACITY OF 25 SQ MM COPPER CONDUCTOR
Maximum Temperature Rise 450°C, Minimum Protection Time 120milliseconds: IS EN 61230 | ||||
Transformer Size Fault Current |
200KVA 7.2kA |
400KVA 14.4kA |
630KVA 22.7kA |
1MVA 36kA |
Protection Time | 627 millisecs | 157 millisecs | 63millisecs* | 25 millisecs* |
*No protection.
The safety device will melt and disintegrate before the breaker trips.
Properly maintained breakers take between 60-100 millisecs to operate.
Despite the evidence from calculations, test results and Safety Standard IS EN 61230, that 25sq mm. copper conductor is not fit for purpose we continue to use it for worker protection in Ireland, every day.
NOTE
Employers who provide safety equipment which is not fit for purpose, risk prosecution under Regulation 82 (2) of S.I. No.299 of 2007.
Tynagh Networks offer anybody (or their nominated charity) €10,000 if they can prove that 25 sq mm copper will protect workers from death or injury, on the possible fault levels of LV networks in Ireland.
If you think we are wrong and can prove it, you have earned yourself or your nominated charity €10,000. In addition, the same offer applies to anybody who can prove that 25sq mm. copper conductor offers any worker protection whatsoever from the possible fault levels of Ireland’s LV networks.
